John Holland recognised that a number of road over rail bridges on a 400km rail line presented limited rolling stock clearance (or tight locations) and risk of encroachment. This resulted in the need to enforce speed restrictions and limitations to track utilisation and had raised operational safety concerns. John Holland wanted to get a detailed understanding of the order of magnitude of these tight locations to inform any remediation work
Geomatic Technologies mobilised its Asset Inspection Mapping System (AIMS3D) on a John Holland hi-rail vehicle to record laser and imagery data through the network. Rail corridor data was captured during the day time, in between revenue services. The kinematic envelope of each train was uploaded into the system and an automatic encroachment analysis for all overhead structures performed. Any laser points that encroached the kinematic envelope were automatically identified, providing John Holland with a detailed understanding of bridge clearances and encroachments across the full rail corridor.
